Joy to The World: Tradition and The Individual

Posted on November 18th, 2008 by varina

From the mountains of Spain to India, Japan and across the Pacific to Samoa and Hawai’i, HCC explores the way that the dances which once expressed the lives of ancient peoples are being re-vitalized by 21st century choreographers. Guest artist Rathna Kumar, director of the Anjali Center for the Performing Arts, presents Awakening, a new piece that sets the steps of classic Kuchipudi to a contemporary beat. World Dance student Hiroshi will offer Matsu No Midori, a traditional Japanese dance rarely seen in the US. Kumu Hula Keli’i Chang, director of Houston’s school of Hawai’ian culture, Hâlau Hô’ola Ka Mana O Hawai’i, uses the ancient traditional story-telling moves of hula to tell new tales. The World Dance Ensemble presents a work by Samoan choreographer Vave Moe Partsch.
